Part II: Work
“Do something you love and you will never work a day in your life”
There is a reason that saying exists. People spend the most productive part of their day doing a job. Hopefully that job fulfils something inside you. Job satisfaction and life accomplishments are how they are sold to us. Bills and a certain lifestyle are the motivation. Never the less, no matter how you look at it, your job is important to your happiness. People you work with also matter, but here they are covered under the one single title of “JOB” or I’ll have to make this a two-parter and I really don’t want to drone on.. Oops…
So back on topic, having one that makes you happy is important, a job that is. If you have a good day at work, you come home happy and have a good night. That in turn makes you pleasant to be around, and in case you haven’t got the gist of this argument, being a nice person is important. Nice people are happy people.
So choosing a job or career needs to have some serious thought. I do not abide by the idea that a teenager knows enough about themselves or the world to pick a career. This is just madness. The very idea that one must choose and “plan” out their entire life when they are normally discovering the joys of alcohol and the opposite sex (while often not at the same time) seems absurd. So I am all for gap years. Go see the world before you decide. Learn the value of the dollar and, the more important, value of your time.
I was lucky enough to have the gap year, the study time and a sweet first job. It solidified my chosen career path. Do I see myself doing this until I am forty? Probably not. I am a firm believer that once something is done, its funness decreases as well as its challenge. So finding something that keeps the challenge fresh to me is paramount. Something that can shake it up from day to day. And something that I can see my progress and my effect on what I started with. That’s just me. You might be different.
I know this doesn’t really apply to any one but me, but I hope I have made an interesting point and maybe made at least one or two people sit and think for a while. In life, things are meant to be challenging but never lose their fun. When they do, then you should rethink where you are. Personally I walk into work with a smile on my face every day. This doesn’t mean my job is perfect, it just means I take enough drugs to make it perfect. That’s a joke by the way. If you think that’s serious, then please exit stage left.
So think about your life, think about the most productive eight hours of your day. Are they worth your time? Are they worth you putting on pants in the morning? Its a tough one, and everyone has bad days so be a little objective. And always remember to have fun. You only get one life after all – make it count.

The days I enjoy the most is when I spend helping someone through whatever problems they are having.
